We local government workers are there for residents from the cradle to the grave.
And today UNISON recognises and celebrates the role those who work for local authorities do.
I am very proud to work for a Council, helping to deliver hundreds of services as well as aiming to make the borough a better place.
It has been, of course, very tough in the last few years for us council workers. Sadly, unlike the NHS or schools, people are less likely to defend us.
Sometimes it feels like we get criticised for everything we do and everything is the Council’s fault.
Local government workers are not traditionally great at talking ourselves up because we concentrate on getting the job done and delivering high quality services. That why days like today are very important. UNISON, the UK’s biggest public sector union, organised this day so we can shout from the rooftops so the public, the media and politicians know and appreciate the work we do day in and day out.
You can find more information on UNISON website www.unison.org.uk about the day but I would urge you, especially those with social media, to be loud and proud about what we do and join in the campaign.
