#heartunions Week – 11th Feb – 17th Feb

HeartUnions week will be taking place from 11 to 17 February 2019. It’s a week of activity throughout England and Wales that focuses on the good work that unions do, and shows how unions offer everyone a voice at work.

Why are we doing HeartUnions week?
HeartUnions week is all about building a stronger movement. We want as many of you to get involved as possible.
It’s an opportunity to celebrate the good work unions do in workplaces across the country. Each year we run a week of activities to show how joining a trade union can help you and your workmates. This year we’re fighting to stamp out zero-hours contracts.

How unions are making a difference
We know that unions can make a real difference. Last year unions won the right for waiting staff to keep their tips, better pay for workers at Macdonald’s, and new rights for pilots and cabin crew in Ryanair and beyond.
But we know we need to do more to win a better deal for workers. And we want to start by stamping out unfair zero-hours contracts.

How can we get involved?
You can pledge to stamp out zero-hours contracts during 2019 by:
• sending a message to your MP asking them to “pledge to ban zero-hours contracts”. Find your local MP https://www.parliament.uk/get-involved/contact-your-mp/
• signing this online petition calling for a ban on zero-hours contracts   https://www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/ban-zero-hours-contracts-3
There’s strength in numbers. So why not see if your friends and colleagues at work want to join up to a union too, and all do it together.

Why join a union?
Unions help workers get together, stop people being treated unfairly and get a better deal from their employers.
They’re the voice of Britain at work. Almost six million people are members of a union – from nurses to checkout assistants to lorry drivers to airline pilots .
They are for you when times are tough, even providing free legal advice if you need it. There are lots of discounts and offers for union members too. And every year they help more than 200,000 people get the training and learning opportunities they need to move on in their career.

Chris is determined to show other young workers the power and importance of unions

When you’re young, it’s all too easy to get shafted by your boss with low hours, no rights, and no security. Thanks to our campaign, more people will have guaranteed hours at work – which means guaranteed pay.
