Blackburn College Redundancies and closure of Trade Union Education

You may possibly have already heard that Blackburn College has decided to close the Trade Union/ Health and Safety Education Centre, which has provided Shop Stewards, Health and Safety Representatives and Trade Union members with TUC and other courses over many years.

The Trades Council considers this to be a hostile act by the College and one which only serves to emphasise the disparity between the support given to business on the one hand and Trade Unions on the other.

We particularly wish to emphasise the current importance of Health and Safety Training. Two major issues confront us; how to safely resume work and how to preserve viable terms and conditions in the aftermath of the economic shutdown. In addressing both these issues, well-trained SRSC safety reps and union reps are vital. The Trade Union/ Health and Safety Education Centre has fulfilled a key role in meeting these training needs on behalf of local employers, unions and workforces for many years, but the knowledge and expertise of trained safety reps has never been so crucial as now. Many of the representatives trained at the Centre represent key frontline workers who are fulfilling essential roles in this time of pandemic.

Please support your local Trade Union Education Centre and send a letter of support to the Principal.
