Labour Local Government Trade Union Principles

Published December 6, 2017 at 10:36

This circular accompanies the document “Labour Local Government Trade Union Principles”, which is an agreed statement with the Labour Group of the Local Government Association (LGA) for England on the relationship between the local government unions – UNISON, GMB and Unite – and Labour councils. Please distribute it widely amongst your members and also use it to establish a dialogue with your council on the issues covered – or strengthen your relationship with it.

The Labour Local Government Trade Union principles document is the result of discussion between the Shadow Cabinet’s Trade Union Liaison Officer, the Labour Group of the LGA and the three local government unions.

It sets out the standards which the Shadow Cabinet and the LGA believe should be met by Labour councils in their relationships with the unions and their policies.

The Principles cover austerity, good industrial relations, exemplary employment practice, the LGPS, promoting equality and in-house services, opposing academisation and the Trade Union Act.
