Community Members Information

At our Annual General Meeting held in March 2017 it was agreed that the role of Community Officer be included in the list of Brach Officers in the current Branch Rules. Peter Grunshaw was nominated and elected.

Peter has worked in the Community and Voluntary sector since 2011. Before being transferred he worked for the council for 8 years and for over twenty years working for the NHS as a cleaner and a nursing assistant on the mental health unit at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

He is currently a Support Time Recovery Worker in mental health, where he supports people with enduring mental health problems and supports them to move in to the community and to be part of the community.

Peter enjoys travelling abroad. He has been to Cuba, Mexico, the USA and most of the countries in Europe. He also enjoys various types of music especially Eurovision, concerts , the theatre, cinema, eating out, cooking and reading biographies.

Peter is also an activist for the LGBT community and is hoping to look at starting a UNISON group in the future. He is also committed in working with the branches equality officer to set up other self organised groups within UNISON which are woman’s, disabled and black members.

Peter hopes to build on the membership in the Community & Voluntary Sector and to improve communication and support to existing members.

With the council tendering many services out to the community and voluntary sector to many different employers it will be a mammoth task getting around to all of them but Peter is determined to get around to as many as he can. A business plan is being put in place to achieve this. We are hoping also to speak to the employers themselves and getting a recognition agreement to protect our member’s terms and conditions and to continue to work with those with an agreement in place.

We will also be asking the council and tendered services to look at joining and putting in place the UNISON Ethical Care Charter. The charter commits those who sign up to the charter too achieve fair work, better pay and improved quality of care. Adequate time for visits and matches the clients need. Staff being paid for travel time between appointments and staff should be on permanent contracts and not zero hour contracts. Staff should also be given regular training and the opportunity to meet colleagues to share best practice and limit isolation.
