On Friday 25th November 2016 the support staff at St Stephen’s CE Primary School in Blackburn joined together to celebrate ‘Stars in Our Schools’
Sian Haworth the Assistant Headteacher who organised the event surprised her support staff by presenting handmade cards, poems & pictures to all members of the school support team.

The Westminster Government is proposing to set up a new regulator for social workers in England.
UNISON has been invited to sit on the advisory board of the new regulator.
Please ask your social worker members for their views on how the new regulator should operate.

The Branch held a coffee/cake event on the 17th November 2016 in the Old Town Hall, Blackburn, lots of people attended and it was good to see old and new members coming to see UNISON has to offer. Branch Officers and reps were in attendance.

MPs held their first debate (7th November) on the terms of Britain’s exit from the EU. Unsurprisingly given recent events, Article 50 was high on the agenda. But crucially, the debate also revolved around the rights at work that we enjoy as part of our EU membership.

UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said: “Ill-conceived government plans to remove statutory duties protecting children should never have been put forward.
“Social workers recognised the danger of removing decades of child protection law, it’s a pity ministers didn’t bother to ask them about the risks posed by the proposals.

On Friday 25 November 2016, across the country schools will be celebrating the people behind the scenes who help children learn, keep them safe and healthy and make sure schools run smoothly.

UNISON is urging members to sign an online petition to protect the rights of vulnerable
children, threatened by plans to let English councils opt out of their statutory duties to them.
The plans are contained in the Children and Social Work Bill currently being considered by Parliament.
